The Course
The course "RADAR NAVIGATION, RADAR PLOTTING " is conducted
as per IMO Model course 1.07 Objectives 1-5 with the approval
of The Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Surface Transport,
Government of India, for Maritime Training.
Purpose
This course provides training in the basic theory
and use of Radar for those who will be in charge of a navigational
watch. It is based on the guidance of training in radar observation
and plotting in section B-1/12 of the International Convention
on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers,
1978 (STCW 1978) as amended in 1995. This model course aims to
meet the minimum training standards in Table A-II/1 of STCW 1995.
The course covers, the theory necessary for understanding hower adar
information is obtained and displayed, the limitations and accuracy
of information, the recognition of critical targets, the measurement
of bearing and distances, and the use of these for fixing the
ship's position and maintaining a plot of the movement of other
ships as an aid to collision avoidance. Exercises in the application
of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at
Sea ( COLREG 1972) will make use of the resulting plots.
The Simulator
The simulator at IMC consists of 4 own ship stations each
with an IMO complaint Radar Display. The course runs for 49 Hrs
with demonstrations and simulator exercise constituting over 55%
of the course time table. The MCA -UK, USCG and the D.G.Shipping
- India approves the simulator used.
